Death of Edward Shirley
A Young Man Well Known in Reno Goes Home to Die
The Lassen Advocate of the 13th instant says: Edward T. Shirley died at the
residence of his parents in Susanville last night at 11 o’clock.  For several
years he had been in the employ of the railroad companies, filling positions of
trust and responsibility with credit to himself and satisfaction to his
employers.  Though just entering upon man’s estate, he had already gained a firm
footing among men with whom stability and reliability in the discharge of duty
are prerequisites.  He had more than this earned their respect and esteem in an
eminent degree for one so young.  We know of no better tribute that could be
paid to a young man than this; except it may be found in the fact that, when
smitten with disease, he turned his face resolutely from the brink of a grave
among strangers, and with loving loyalty set his wavering footsteps in the
direction of his home and mother.  No consideration of physical weakness or
suffering prevented him laying the burden of his life down in the presence of
her from who he received the precious charge.  He came home to die; and those
who know him best, believe that the pilgrimage was not undertaken until the last
faint hope of life had been denied him.  If death held any terrors for him, he
did not make them manifest; but-as if in recompense- the Dark Angel came to him
in peace and quiet, and the parted waters gave back no despairing cry.  He hath
crossed to the other side.  The deceased leaves a father and mother, two sisters
and a brother to mourn his loss.
