BOUELLE had thirty-six years of consecutive experience in practical work as a school man, leading up to and preparatory to his succession to the duties of superintendent of public schools of the City of Los Angeles on February 1, 1929. Mr. Bouelle, long regarded as one of the outstanding educators of Southern California, was born in Los Angeles, at First and Spring streets, February 9, 1875, son of August and Marie Louise (Viellet) Bouelle. Frank A. Bouelle attended the elementary school at Eighth and Grand Avenue, later attended the Los Angeles High School, completed the teachers’ course at the State Normal School at Los Angeles in 1893, and in 1912 was graduated Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California. During 1893-1895 he was principal of the Lamanda Park Grammar School, then taught in the schools of Los Angeles five years, and between 1900 and 1924 had a consecutive service as principal of elementary and junior high schools. In 1924 he was promoted to assistant superintendent of schools, and supervised the Hollywood division of elementary schools. Mr. Bouelle is an educator of broad and generous ideals, and his election to succeed Mrs. Susan M. Dorsey as superintendent of the Los Angeles city schools was a very popular choice and one regarded as significant of continued steady progress in the advancement of the educational program of the city. Mr. Bouelle was for three terms a member of the Board of Education of Los Angeles County. He was the first president of the Los Angeles City Principal’s Club. He is a member of the French Academy and has long been prominent in the Masonic fraternity, being a past master of Vallee de France Lodge No. 329, A.F. and A.M., has served as presiding officer of the various Scottish Rite bodies and has attained the thirty-third degree of Scottish Rite Masonry. He is a member of the Masonic Club, the Jonathan Club, and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, and a member of the Skull and Dagger Society of the University of Southern California. He married, August 8, 1906, Miss Leah Bletso, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert J. Bletso, of Los Angeles. They have one daughter, Mary Louise Bouelle.
