C. Wolfe, Editor CLARK, Eli P.: Capitalist. Born Iowa City, Iowa. November 25th, 1847, son of Timothy B. and Eliza E. (Calkins) Clark. Educated in public schools and Iowa College, Grinnell, Iowa; taught school in Iowa, 1866: moved to Missouri, 1867, engaged in farming and teaching district school, 1867-75. Crossed plains driving his own team to Prescott, Arizona; assistant postmaster, clerk and bookkeeper in general store, 1875-77; appointed Auditor Arizona District 1877, which office he held ten years; engaged in lumber business with A. D. Adams, operating under firm name of Clark & Adams, 1891. Moved to Los Angeles, California, 1891. and with his brother-in-law, Gen. M. H. Sherman, built Los Angeles Consolidated Electric Railway; vice-president and manager of this corporation; organized Pasadena & Los Angeles Railway in 1894, opened for traffic 1895; built Los Angeles Pacific Railway, connecting Los Angeles with Santa Monica; subsequently built road to Venice, Del Rey and Redondo; he was president and general manager of this corporation and half owner with General Sherman until their entire holdings were sold to the Southern Pacific Co. and the system merged into Pacific Electric System in 1910. Organized Mt. Hood Railway and Power Co.; president of this corporation 1901-11; president Clark & Sherman Land Co., organized in 1905. Besides extensive holdings in beach property, this company has large oil interests. He is vice-president of the Main Street Company, a corporation holding real estate with improvements, of which the Central Building, at Sixth and Main Streets, is the most important. He is now engaged in the construction of the Clark Hotel, which will be eleven stories in height and contain 550 rooms. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Pomona College, president of the Board of Trustees of the First Congregational Church, president of the Congregational Union, and member of the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles Young Men's Christian Association, also a member of the California, University and L. A. Country Clubs of Los Angeles. Married in Prescott, Arizona, on April 8th, 1880, to Miss Lucy H. Sherman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Sherman of West Rupert, Vt. Residence, 9 St. James Park.
