His father, Dennis Rockwell Hunt, was born in Vermont, came to California in 1850, and in 1855 married Nancy Zumwalt Cotton, who was born in Indiana and came to California in a covered wagon. Her first husband, Alexander Cotton, died en route while crossing the Sierra Nevada Mountains. By her marriage to Dennis Rockwell Hunt there were five sons: Major C., Frank L., Mark T., Rockwell D. and George G. Rockwell D. Hunt attended public schools in Sacramento County and in Napa, completing the work of the commercial department of the Napa College in 1887 and graduated Bachelor of Philosophy in 1890 and Master of Arts in 1892. He was professor of history in Napa College from 1891 to 1893 and for forty years has been an interested student of Pacific Coast history and the economic and commercial relations of the Pacific region. He graduated in 1892 from the California School of Elocution and Oratory at San Francisco. His Doctor of Philosophy degree came from Johns Hopkins University in 1895, his chief teacher being Herbert Baxter Adams. The doctorate was awarded for studies in history and economics. Doctor Hunt was professor of history and economics at the University of the Pacific from 1895 to 1902. He was principal of the San Jose High School from 1902 to 1908. He has been a member of the faculty of the University of Southern California at Los Angeles since 1908, at first as professor of economics and sociology, later as dean of the College of Commerce and Business Administration, and now as dean of the graduate school and professor of economics. He has lectured at Stanford University and the University of California and is author of Genesis of California's First Constitution, California the Golden, California an American Commonwealth, co-author of Ox- cart to Airplane, and his name has appeared tinder titles to many articles on historical and economic subjects in magazines. He has served as a governor of the Los Angeles Museum, is a member of the American Historical Association, American Economic Association, for eight years was president of the Historical Society of Southern California, is a fellow of the American Geographic Society, is founder and fellow of the Pacific Geographic Society and a member of the American Oriental Society. He employed his sabbatical leave during 1926- 27 for a trip around the world, during which he visited many educational institutions and continued his study of world problems by direct contact. Doctor Hunt is a member of the Pi Gamma Mu, was president in 1927-28 of the Southern California chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Delta Kappa, the Skull and Dagger Society and the Phi Beta Kappa. He belongs to the City Club and Municipal League of Los Angeles, the X Club, and is a Methodist and Republican. He married, July 24, 1895, Nancy Seavy Stuart, also a native of California. Her father, Daniel F. Stuart, was a pioneer farmer and orchardist of California. Doctor and Mrs. Hunt had four children: Paul Adams, born in 1896, married Imogen Walker, and has two daughters; Lloyd Freeman, born in 1897, married Dorothy Burnett; Rockwell Dennis, Jr., born in 1901 and died in 1913; and Clarence Stuart, born in 1904. All three of the living sons are graduates of the University of Southern California, Paul being at present an instructor in physical education. Lloyd an electrical engineer, and Clarence an attorney.
