El Campo Santo 15415 E. Don Julian Road, City of Industry, CA Compiled by Penny Dodd This is a very condensed version of the history of El Campo Santo that was originally written by Alexandra Rasic. El Campo Santo (the sacred ground) is one of the oldest private cemeteries in southern California. Today it is part of the Homestead Museum, located on land that was once part of Rancho La Puente, a 49,000-acre land grant shared by William Workman and John Rowland. The Workman family established the cemetery in the early 1850's with David Workman, William's older brother as the first family member to be buried there in November 1855. Over the years, this little cemetery has had several owners. The first owner, after Workman had to sell due to bankruptcy, was L. F. Lewis who was eventually sued for the desecration of the cemetery. Walter P. Temple, grandson of William Workman, acquired the property in 1917 and had a Greek Revival-style mausoleum built on the ground where St. Nicholas Chapel once stood. St. Nicholas Chapel had been erected by William Workman and burned to the ground during the time that Lewis owned the property. The Brown family bought the property in 1940 and remained owners until 1963 when the City of Industry began purchasing portions of Workman's original rancho to be restored as a museum. El Campo Santo was designated as a California State Historic Landmark in 1976.
