The shooting, according to the statement of Dellier, was in self- defense. He is booked at the county jai on the charge of murder. The two men had been at outs for several weeks, and Elescinto, according to witnesses, had made threats to "do up" Dellier whenever he met him. These statements had been repeated to Dellier and he began carrying a revolver to protect himself from the Mexican. Yesterday shortly after noon Elescinto came to Compton from the Latin section camp, and after parading around town went to Dellier's cabin, in the outer section of the village, and not finding Dellier at home proceeded to throw the bed clothing and furniture out of the house and work destruction generally to the interior of the little place. While the Mexican was busy tearing up a carpet on the floor Dellier came in and the Mexican attacked him with a heavy iron bucket, striking him on the head and knocking him down. Dellier's scalp was laid open across the top of his skull and he was dazed by the blow, but he managed to stagger to his feet and resist further attack upon him. He backed away from the Mexican, parrying blows with one arm, and finally drew a revolver and fired a shot in the direction of his assailant. The bullet struck Elescinto in the side of the head and inflicted a wound from which he died in a few minutes. Dellier made a statement after the shooting in which he said he fired the shot to scare the Mexican away and that he did not intend to hit him, but that he was only protecting himself when he fired. Dellier was arrested by the town marshal of Compton and was taken to the county jail. The body of Elescinto was removed to an undertaking establishment and the coroner notified. Deputy Coroner Fred Williams went to Compton and took charge of the body. He summoned a jury and witnesses to appear at an inquest to be held there this afternoon. Dellier is given a good reputation by his neighbors, and the Mexican whom he killed is said to have been a quarrelsome individual, especially when he was under the influence of liquor.
