December 14, 1906 “HONORABLE JOHN ENA DIES IN LOS ANGELES A Former Inter-Island President and Capitalist. (Associated Press Cablegram.) LOS ANGELES, December 13. John Ena died here yesterday. [portrait is also printed] The Honorable John Ena was for many years a prominent figure in the commercial and political circles of the Territory. Born here of Chinese and Hawaiian parentage, he worked his way up until he was a commanding figure in Honolulu. He was invested with the insignia of an Officer of the Crown by King Kalakaua in 1888 for services rendered the kingdom and later sat in the House of Representatives of the Republic. In 1899 he was chosen as president of the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Company, which position he held until 1902. With the company he had been identified for nearly twenty years, starting in as a clerk for the late T. R. Foster, the first president of the parent company of the Inter-Island. The deceased married into the Lane family, a leading Hawaiian family, seven accomplished children being born to him. After retiring from the presidency of the Inter-Island Company, the deceased moved to Los Angeles [Long Beach].
