Mr. Hammel was born in Germany and was 56 years old at the time of his death. He came to this country early in 1850 and engaged in hotel keeping. He was proprietor of the Bella Union, now St. Charles Hotel. He was also interested in grape-growing, and owned a large vineyard in Los Angeles at one time. He also served as a member of the City Council, where his record as a protector of the best interests of the city was a good one. In 1885 he went to Kern County and served as Supervisor for that county. He returned to Los Angeles in 1889 and became associated with A. H. Denker and kept the United States Hotel. He leaves a wife and daughter, the latter a young lady of 16. The funeral takes place today at 2 o'clock, from the family residence, Seventh street and Grand avenue. Mr. Hammel was a member of the Los Angeles Chapter, R.A.M., No. 33, Coeur de Lion Commandery No. 9, K. T., and of Al Malikah Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and a charter member of Lodge No. 66, A.O.U.W. He was also one of the oldest Masons in the city. His funeral will be under the auspices of Los Angeles Lodge No. 42 F. and A.M., to which he belonged, and the interment will be at Rosedale cemetery. Coeur de Lion Commandery No. 9, K. T. will also act as esocrt to the Los Angeles Lodge, and will hold no meeting tonight out of respect to Mr. Hammel.
