Henry M. Smith, ex-Superior Judge of this county and a member of the firm of Smith, Winder & Smith, attorneys at law, died at his residence in this city yesterday morning, of consumption, after a long illness. The deceased, who was 48 years of age, was born near Arlington, in Fairfax county, Virginia. During the war he served in the Confederate army for three years, part of which time he was in command of a company. From 1866 to 1867 he was in Mexico whence he came to California, reaching San Francisco on January 2, 1868. For over a year he taught at the Oakland academy, and then he came to this city and applied himself to the practice of law. In March 1883, he was appointed a Superior Judge to fill Judge Sepulveda's unexpired term and it was generally conceded that no more impartial judge ever sat upon the local bench than he. The Bar association met yesterday afternoon and adopted appropriate resolutions of regret and sympathy and it is probable that most, if not all, the old-time lawyers in this city will attend the funeral, which will take place this afternoon at the Rosedale Cemetery.
