Lieut.-Col. R. H. Alexander
His Funeral to Take Place Today

Lieut.-Col. Richard H. Alexander, U.S.A., until recently Medical Directory, 
Department of Arizona, died at his late residence in this city Friday morning 
last [March 29, 1889].

Col. Alexander was born in Illinois and entered the army from Kentucky, 
December 2, 1853, when he was appointed first lieutenant and assistant surgeon. 
He was promoted to captain and assistant surgeon, December 2, 1853, major and 
surgeon June 11, 1862, Lieutenant-Colonel and surgeon December 7, 1884.  He was 
breveted Lieutenant-Colonel, U.S.A., March 13, 1865, for faithful and 
meritorius services during the war.

Col. Alexander was a son of Gen. E. B. Alexander, U.S.A.  He was also a brother 
of Col. C. T. Alexander, U.S.A., of Mrs. Lieber, wife of the Acting Judge 
Advocate General of the Army, and of Mrs. Larned, wife of Prof. Larned of the 
United States Military Academy at West Point.

The funeral will take place with military honors from Col. Alexander's late 
residence, No. 119 Estrella avenue, at 1:30 o'clock p.m. today. Interment in 
Rosedale Cemetery.  

Companions of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion and comrades of the Grand 
Army of the Republic are cordially invited to attend.

Col. Grierson, commanding the Department of Arizona, issued the following 
circular Saturday:

CIRCULAR - HEADQUARTERS - DEPARTMENT OF ARIZONA
Los Angeles (Cal.) March 30, 1889. 
The Department Commander regrets to announce to offices of the department staff 
the death of their late comrade, Lieut-Col. Richard H. Alexander, U.S.A., in 
March 29th inst., in this city.

The funeral will take place with military honors from Col. Alexander's late 
residence, No. 119 Estrella avenue, Los Angeles, at 1:30 o'clock, Monday, April 
1st, prox; interment in Rosedale Cemetery.

The Seventh Reigment of Infantry, National Guard of California, having kindly 
tendered their services for the purpose, will act as escort.

The following named officers are announced as pall-bearers:  Brevet Brig-Gen. 
E. Bouton, U.S.V.; Col. G. W. Wells, U.S.V.; Lieut.-Col. J. R. Smith, U.S.A.; 
Maj. A. S. Kimball, U.S.A; Brevet Maj. W. A. Elderkin, U.S.A.: Capt. C. A 
Booth, U.S.A.
