Mr. Pearson: Rev. Dr. Pearson of Phoenix, Ariz. has been supplying St. Peter's Church of this city during his summer vacation, and all who have heard his sermons have been more than pleased--they have been delighted as well as spiritually benefitted. Las Sunday was expected to have been his last service before returning to his charge in Phoenix, and he was to preach and administer the Holy Communion in the morning and preach a discourse especially to young people in the evening; but on opening the services in the morning he announced that his health would not admit of his conducting an evening service, but he hoped to be able to conduct the morning service in full. He did so and preached a sermon which will not soon be forgotten by those who had the privilege of listening to it. It was a sermon such as one who should know it was to be his last message to his people might not wish to change a single thought or word. The communion followed, and it was remarked by all that there was an especial tenderness in his manner in this service. At the close of the service he went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. Reynolds, where he was being entertained for the day (his family being in Los Angeles), and lay on a sofa in the sitting-room to rest for a little time. He had not complained of being over-fatigued or of any special illness. The host and hostess left the room for a few moments to attend to some domestic duties, and on returning shortly found him lying on the floor insensible. A physician was soon called and every effort was made to restore the patient to consciousness, but without success. He remained unconscious until Tuesday morning. He is now in a fair way of recovery, although there is little doubt but he suffered a shock of paralysis. His friends here and elsewhere will rejoice to know that he will probably recover his physical and mental vigor. Los Angeles Times, October 1, 1890, Page 3 Death of Dr. Pearson. Rev. Dr. Pearson of Phoenix, Ariz., who has been ill for some weeks past at the residence of Merrick Reynolds, in San Pedro, died Monday night at 11 o'clock. The remains were brought to this city yesterday afternoon and will be buried from St. Paul's Church Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Dr. Pearson was a man of marked pulpit ability and much respected wherever known. Until recently ordained in the Episcopal church, he was a minister of the Baptists and widely known among them. He leaves a widow and one daughter. Los Angeles Times, October 5, 1890, Page 6 The Rev. Robert W. Pearson, D. D., whose burial took place from St. Paul's Church on Thursday last, though but a little known on this coast, was a man of brilliant intellect, and among the Baptista, whose communion he recently left for that of the Episcopal Church, held positions of great importance and influence. He was for some years the pastor of the Fourth Avenue Baptist Church, Pittsburg, Pa., a church which he built, seating thousands, and which was always packed to the doors. Some of his former parishioners are now in this city and esteem him as one of the most gifted of preachers and pastors. A memorial discourse will be delivered at Christ Church, corner of Broadway and Temple street, this morning.
