Ellis, one of the pioneers of Pasadena, died on Chestnut street today, aged 52 years. He had been in poor health for many years, and came from Long Beach this summer very ill. He was born in Indiana and spent his boyhood on a farm. When he was 10 years old, his family moved to Jasper county, Iowa, and Ellis went to the civil war in the Ninth Cavalry from that State. He came to Pasadena about sixteen years ago, and has been greatly interested in the development of the city. He has dealt heavily in real estate, and a few weeks before he was stricken with his final illness he began the erection of a block on South Fair Oaks avenue. He was the prime mover of the Pasadena Sharpshooters, organized during the recent war, and was always full of enterprise and public spirit. A widow and three children survive him. The funeral will take place Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Reynolds & Van Nuys. Additional Comments: Note: Other documents listed his name variously as John and Jehu.
