Mr. Haas was born in Germany but in 1849 his father's family emigrated to the United States and settled in Newnan [Coweta Co., Ga.]. Here young Haas grew to manhood and at the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted as a member of the Newnan Guards and remained in service until the close of the hostilities. After the war he engaged in the railroad business and rose rapidly from one position to another, until finally he was made assistant to President Spencer of the Southern Railway. He was forced to retire from active work however on account of ill health and for several years prior to his death had resided in California.
