Beery, former pastor of the Culver-Palms Methodist church, conducted the devotionals and the Methodist choir was in charge of the music. Interment was in Forest Lawn cemetery. The funeral cortege, which was one of the longest ever witnessed here, was headed by Lieut. Cecil Truschel and Motorcycle Officer Denver Postal, of the Culver City police department, the police body accompanying the procession to the city limits. Young Hughes was one of the most popular boys in the vicinity and among the several hundred attending his funeral were a legion of his young friends in addition to many Masons and affiliated bodies, of Culver City and Palms. He is survived by his mother. Mrs. M. F. Hughes, a brother, William Hughes and a niece, Mrs. Mabel Hughes Cogan, all of Durango street. Hughes was in bathing with Frank Miranda, of 451 Ince boulevard, when he suddenly disappeared beneath the breakers after shouting for help. Miranda, who is not an expert swimmer, rushed for aid but life guards failed to find his body which was later washed ashore near Sunset pier. Hughes had resided here for more than twelve years.
