Commander Koger Head of Naval Aviation Succombs to Heart AIlment Lieutenant Commander Esten B. Koger, of Haddington Dr., pioneer Naval aviator, died of a heart ailment at Twenty-nine Palms Tuesday. His funeral rites were held Thursday afternoon at Bresee Bros. in Los Angeles. Commander Koger was born fifty-nine years ago at Decatur City, Iowa. He took up aviation before the World War, during which he saw service as a Naval flyer, and since which time the history of flying cannot be written without him. For the past five years he has been in charge of the Navy’s reserve aviation training in Southern California. Among his early exploits was the sinking by him of a German submarine off the Virginia Capes in 1918. His skill and heroism in this flight are commemorated in the archives of the Bureau of Navigation. Well known throughout Southern California, Commander Koger was a member of the Mason's Knights Templars, Shrine Rancheros Visitadores, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National and the Pacific Geographic Societies, Adventurers Club, Texas Rangers, Early Birds, (men who flew before the World War), Army and Navy Club of Washington, D. C., Athletic Club, Pacific Coast Club of Long Beach, Santa Monica Athletic Club, Riviera Country Club, Hollywood Athletic Club, California and Jonathan Clubs and of the California Yacht Club. He is survived by his wife, Doris Koger and his son, Carl Cliff Koger, of Dennison, Texas.
