MELVILLE, postmaster of Fort Bragg, has had many years of active association with the commercial interests of Mendocino County. He is still interested in the lumber industry, and most of his active career in California was identified with this business. Mr. Melville was born in the Old Dominion State of Virginia, December 28, 1879. His father, Andrew Melville, was for many years a business man in the City of Washington, D. C. His mother was Barbara Shreve, also a native of Virginia. Charles B. Melville attended the grade and high schools at Washington. During his early manhood he spent three years as a Virginia farmer. In 1898, when he was nineteen years of age, he enlisted for service in the Spanish- American war with the Third Virginia Volunteer Infantry. After being released from military duty he came to California, for a time worked in the mines and then in the lumber camps of Mendocino County. Mr. Melville was in the lumber business actively in this county for twenty-three years. His home has been at Fort Bragg since the fall of 1913. He was appointed postmaster in April, 1930, and now gives his time to the direction of the business of that office. He has been a leader in civic affairs and was a member of the California State Legislature in 1925-27, served on the State Central Committee of the Republican party in 1928-29, and for two terms was high school trustee of Fort Bragg. Mr. Melville is a member of the California Postmasters Association and is affiliated with the Masonic fraternity and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He married Miss Ida C. Mills, who was born at Ukiah, member of a pioneer Mendocino County family. They have four children: Rita, wife of Dr. Glen Carlson; Vivian, wife of E. E. Dowe: Charles E. and Lois.
