SPRECKELSEN, present city clerk of Fort Bragg, is a native Californian, born in Santa Cruz County December 13, 1895, and was identified with the lumber business until he became a public official. He also has a military service record which included a period of active duty in France. His father, Charles Spreckelsen, a merchant at Watsonville, was born in Germany and settled in California about 1871. He left his native land in order to avoid the compulsory military service of the German army. He died in 1927. His wife was Mary Parrish, who was born in California, where her people were pioneer settlers. Alonzo R. Spreckelsen was one of six children. As a boy he attended the grade and high schools of Santa Cruz County and at the age of eighteen began his independent career, at first in manual labor. Soon afterward he became connected with the lumber industry in Mendocino County, and was thus employed until December, 1917, when he enlisted. He went overseas, was in France six months, until the armistice, and then with the Army of Occupation until May, 1919. He became a corporal in the Three Hundred and Forty-fifth Field Artillery. After his discharge in June, 1919, he returned to Fort Bragg, and was in the office of the Union Lumber Company there until May, 1930, when he was appointed to the office of city clerk. He is a proficient worker, has systematized the business of his office and to his official responsibility adds a pleasing personality. He is a Republican in politics, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion. Mr. Spreckelsen married Miss Blanche Boyd, who was born in Mendocino County, where her people were early settlers. They have a family of four sons, Marvin, Beverley, Carl and David, the last two being twins.
