Distinguished Service Cross Citation
  Ernest B. Ball, pharmacist's mate, second class, United States Navy, attached to
Company E, 5th Regiment, United States Marine Corps. For extraordinary heroism in
action near St. Etienne, France, October 3, 1918. He continually exposed himself to
severe machine-gun and artillery fire while dressing and carrying wounded soldiers
belonging to the unit to which he was attached. Residence at enlistment: Ukiah,
Calif.
