Fales of Fort Bragg died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 at home after a long illness. Born on Oct. 19, 1926 near Dos Rios, Calif., to Vernon and Annie Fales, he was 76. No memorial services were held. Vernon, a lifetime resident of Mendocino County, worked in the timber industry for many years, retiring in 1989. He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 7, 1945 to Nov. 10, 1946 and in the Army Reserves from Sept. 30, 1946 to Sept. 29, 1949. His hobbies were hunting, photography and gardening. Vernon is survived by his wife of 56 years, Violet Fales; children, Pamalla Amundsen of Fort Bragg, Janet Conkle of White Bluff, Tenn., Sharon Fales of Fort Bragg and Brian Fales of Fort Bragg; siblings, Lorie Spears, Esther Jones, Tom Fales and Mary Ann Tryon. He is also survived by grandchildren, Ryan Amundsen of Cottonwood, Calif., Scott Conkle of Dickson, Tenn., Rachelle Amundsen of Sacramento, Christopher Fales and Nicholas Fales, both of Fort Bragg, and great granddaughter, Megan Conkle of Dickson. He was predeceased by siblings, Elaine McClure and Frank Fales, and grandson Steven Conkle. Memorials are suggested to MCDH Hospice or the Fort Bragg Fire Department.
