Melton, 35 years old, was killed Monday afternoon, January 2, when an oak tree fell upon him while he was cutting wood. A native of Oklahoma, Mr. Melton had lived in Willits for the past 14 years, the last ten of which he served as a journeyman machinist for Remco. He was a Viet Nam veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy, was a member of Willits Post No. 174 of the American Legion, and a member of Little Lake Grange. Survivors include his wife Mavis of Willits; his sons, Phillip and Jimmy, and his daughters, Paula, Shirley and Jenny, all of Willits; his mother, Etta Melton of Willits; his father, Vernon; his brothers, Paul and Ross; and his sisters Tracey, Sherry and Donna, all of Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 6, at Anker Lucier Mortuary with Kenneth Irwin of the Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in Willits Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mendo-Lake unit of the American Cancer Society.
