Take Carlos Street (off of Main Street) go about a 1/4 mile (past Alturas Creamery), take the one lane dirt road on the left.....you will be able to see the cemetery from Carlos Street. In the center of the (very small) cemetery, you will see a flag pole, and a large rock with a plaque on it. The plaque reads: PIONEER CEMETARY THE FIRST CEMETERY TO BE USED BY THE RESIDENTS OF ALTURAS FROM 1872 TO 1890. APPROXIMATELY SIXTY BODIES OF PIONEER RESIDENTS ARE INTERRED HERE. RESTORATION BY COOPERATIVE EFFORTS OF THE NATIVE DAUGHTERS OF THE GOLDEN WEST THE ALTURAS GARDEN CLUB AND THE ALTURAS CEMETERY DISTRICT DEDICATED FEBRUARY FIRST, 1964 The plaque says that approximately sixty people are interred here, but there are only fifteen stones in the cemetery. One of the stones have two people listed, and one of the stones have three people listed, so there are 18 records available.
