This correspondent is evidently a little mistaken, as we have authentic information of a white child in that valley in the year 1848, long before the settlement of Surprise valley by the whites began. The person alluded to was the late George W. Welch, formerly Clerk of this county, and the deceased husband of our worthy School Superintendent, Mrs. Alice Welch. In the spring of 1848, Mr. Welch's parents left the State of Missouri for the Pacific Coast. They came in the Lassen route and upon reaching Surprise valley, George was born, and it is safe to say that he was the first white child ever born in that valley. FROM LAKE CITY We are sorry that we omitted in our last, mention of the death of Mrs. Mary Church. Her death occurred about a month since. Mrs. Church was an excellent woman of whom we never heard any one speak ill. She leaves a husband and three children - two sons and a daughter. In common with many friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing husband and to the children who will "seek in vain to find love like a mother's." It is not given to mortal vision to look beyond the gate which Death opens, but we trust that, "through sad, sorrowful mists," our dear friend has "gone on into a great brightness." SIDNEY Parties living in Big valley between Lookout and Adin can by looking closely notice three letters, C. A. W., on the east side of Mt. Shasta. The C and A are quite plain, but it requires some imagination to properly see the W. They are caused by the rocks projecting through the snow. NEW CITIZENS - Judge Harris last week, on evidence of A. K. Long and James Wylie, naturalized John Stewart of Nova Scotia and Joseph Abram of Canada. Born - STEVENSON - In Red Bluff, July 23, 1888, to the wife of W. T. Stevenson, a daughter. Born - OSBORN - Near Lookout, July 26th, 1888, to the wife of O. M. Osborn, a son.
