Near Death - Mrs. Dr. Jesse, while visiting the family of W. C. Howard of Willow Creek, near Hayden Hill, last week, was taken violently ill of congestion of the stomach. She is subject to these attacks, though this is the first while living here. Dr. Jesse has been with her constantly and with the assistance of Dr. Forrest of Alturas relief was found and at last report she was slowly improving. Corrupt - The Independent is giving the Supervisors some hard blows for their reckless and unlawful doings. It is too bad that the government of Modoc county is so loosely conducted, and, as the Advocate says, with Harris as Judge and such a Board of Supervisors it is almost enough to drive some seekers from our county. The voters of Modoc should select good and competent officers this fall. As to the Judge we will have to endure his presence for another two years. Anna Pratt has been quite ill this week but is now improving. Judge May of Alturas had a slight stroke of paralysis last week. He is reported improving. J. W Marsh, an old resident of Alturas fell from the bridge at that place last Monday afternoon, breaking his neck and causing instant death. He was slightly intoxicated. John McLeod, was sent to State prison two years ago for stealing cattle has returned to Alturas and is preparing to open a butcher shop again, and try to redeem his name. Calvin Hall will sell tomatoes very reasonable at his garden near Gouger Neck, until the first frost comes. This is where parties desiring large quantities should go. F. M. Kesselring who has been in Mexico for nearly a year is on his way back to Modoc to settle up some of his business here. It is said he will return to Mexico and make his future home there. OBITUARY The sad intelligence of the death of our esteemed neighbor, Mrs. M. S. Brownell, wife of R. G. Brownell, was received in the town of Lookout last Sunday. Mrs. Brownell died September 2nd 1888, and was buried in Oakland, laid in the Mountain View cemetery. She was born in Ohio Mar. 12th, 1830 and married to Russell G. Brownell June 8th, 1846, and was the mother of thirteen children ten of whom are now living and have grown to honorable manhood and womanhood. They children now living are: Mrs. Mary J. Warmky, Independence, Mo. D. R. Brownell, San Francisco DeWitt C. Brownell, Mud Lake, Modoc Co. D. C. Brownell, San Francisco Mrs. Lucina M. Etzenhouser, Independence, Mo. L. G. Brownell, Lookout, Cal. Mrs. Gyretha Brown, Fresno, Cal. Mrs. Ima Packwood, Bieber, Cal. Ella S. and Delos G. Brownell, of Lookout, Cal. Mrs. Brownell has been a life sufferer, and during her last days on earth was attended by her two sons, Duane and Don Carlos, and the best medical skill of the State. Everything was done to make her last days comfortable. She was a true neighbor and friend, a kind and indulgent mother, good and affectionate wife. Many times, as many citizens can attest, did she go in heat and cold, in rain and storm, by night and by day, to administer to the wants and alleviate the suffering of others. She had triumphantly and well done her mission here on earth, and now repose in the high courts of heaven as God's good and faithful servant. The power to stay the rising tear and keep it from welling up anew is in the sweet promise. "There's rest in Heaven," Our dearest friends fade away, and while we weep, and our hearts bleed with anguish, there is solace - yes, there is happiness - in the thought, "sorrow vanquished, labor ended, jordan past. No fear, no woe, A calm and undisturbed repose, Asleep in Jesus." "One day nearer, signs the seaman, As he glides the water o'ver, While the light is softly dying On his distant native shore. "Thus the Christian, and life's journey, As his life-boat cuts the fears, On the evening cries with rapture, I am one day nearer home." M.D.M.
