J. W. PATTON, ESQ., a wealthy stock-raiser and farmer of Salinas, California,
has been a resident of this State since 1860.

  A native of Fayette county, Pennsylvania, he was born November 1, 1833. When a
young man he directed his way westward, first to Salt Lake, and thence to
California via San Bernardino county or the Southern route. After prospecting
along the coast he finally located at Natividad, Monterey county. He commenced
farming on a comparatively modest scale, and from time to time has added to his
acreage until he now owns about 2,500 acres of the best soil of the Salinas valley.

  He was married in 1859, to Miss Cornelia Stewart, a native of Pennsylvania,
and they have one son and four daughters, namely: Alice, William, Emma, Mary and
Annie. Mr. and Mrs. Patton are both of German descent. They and their family are
highly esteemed by all who know them.
