The Salinas Valley Rustler, February 28, 1919 
“Loss of Darling Child Desolates Bastedo Home.

The whole community was shocked and grieved to hear of the sudden death of baby 
Marjorie May, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Bastedo [Joseph Hankinson 
Bastedo].  The little one was ill only Saturday and Sunday, and despite the 
best medical attention of three doctors and a trained nurse, she died Monday 
morning [February 24].  It was believed Sunday night that she would recover; 
hence the greater shock when death came.

Marjorie May was an unusual little girl of nearly three years of age.  From 
babyhood her happy disposition and ever-ready smile won her as friends both the 
old and young of the town.  Added to that was a doll-like face and a very 
bright mind, making her a baby who attracted everyone’s attention.  Her happy 
voice and many delightful mannerisms will be missed by all, while the home of 
Mr. and Mrs. Bastedo is desolated.

The funeral services were held from the Bastedo home and interment made in the 
I.O.O.F. cemetery [aka King City Cemetery] last Tuesday afternoon [February 
25].  Many floral pieces of beautiful design were sent as a last token of love 
from her friends to little Marjorie May.” END
