Cowall [Cowell], Designer of Grade School, Buried Here Arthur E. Cowall [sic], 78, remembered locally as the architect who designed the central unit of King City grammar school on Pearl Street, was brought here for burial this week. He passed away in his home at Sonoma last Wednesday [June 30] and the funeral service was conducted in that city Monday [July 5] afternoon. Graveside service was read at the local [King City] cemetery Tuesday [July 6] afternoon in the presence of relatives who had come from various sections of the state. In this vicinity Mr. Cowall [sic] is also known as the builder of the road to the Pinnacles, starting at Bear Valley, which is in use today. When he came here to work on the grammar school he brought with him Herbert Pledger, long known as local contractor and builder. Mr. Cowall [sic] was for many years surveyor for Merced County, then left there to travel for a time before locating with Mrs. Cowall [sic] in Sonoma. The couple had often visited in town as Mrs. Cowall [sic], the former Nellie Harrison, was a sister of the late Mrs. Minnie Henry, and their family home was at Hernandez [San Benito County]. Surviving Mr. Cowall [sic] are his wife, Nellie; a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Oliver of Oakland; two sons, Kenneth Cowall [sic] of Summit, N. J., and Stanley Cowall [sic] of Cleavland, Ohio. There are seven grandchildren. Local relatives include Mrs. Phyllis Gleason, Mrs. Evelyn Da Rosa, Mrs. Eleanor Morris, nieces; Harold Henry, nephew; Mrs. Sarah Harison [sic], sister-in-law; and brothers-in-law H[oward] H[arold] Harrison, R[alph] R[ussell] Harrison. Other nieces include Mrs. Ethel Bastedo of Pacific Grove, Mrs. June Benson, Greenfield; Mrs. Marian Hay, Paicines; Mrs. Barbara Schmidt, Placerville; Mrs. Hazel Reeder, Ontario; Mesdames Frances Hensen [Henson], Virginia Covey, of Riverdale; Mrs. Betty Harrison, Fresno. Nephews at Clovis is Gordon Harlan, and at Riverdale is Donald Harlan; Keith Harlan, Watsonville. A brother-in- law, William Harrison, resides at Banning, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ada Harlan, of Riverdale." END Additional Comments: The Rustler-Herald (King City, California).
