A Slave of the Morphine Habit Kills Himself Near Salinas. Salinas, May 17th.— Last night Coroner France was notified that an unknown man had committed suicide at a house occupied by Rufe Smith on the ranch of Jesse D. Carr, seven miles from here. The Coroner found the man on the bed where he had fallen, his brains being scattered all over the bed and floor. On examination it was found that the man entered the house in the absence of Mr. Smith, took Smith's rifle, walked to the bed and while in a standing position, placed the muzzle of the rifle to the point of his chin and discharged it. The bullet tore away the right side of his face, nose and forehead, disfiguring him past recognition. His hat shows a bullet-hole. The bullet was found lodged in a joist overhead. The Coroner found in the mans pockets two white handkerchiefs, a large jack- knife, some matches, a collar button and two hypodermic syringes, but no money or morphine. There were three letters addressed to A. H. Johnson, Castroville. One of the letters was dated Chicago, May 5, 1890, and was signed, "Your brother, Frank Johnson. The letters related to money matters in which the deceased was interested, and he had evidently been looking for a remittance from the proceeds of the same. The man was seen during the day, and seemed to be acting very strangely. He was evidently crazed from the effects of morphine."
