The Napa Register of the 29th says: W[elcome] B[aylies] Arnold died at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon [May 28, 1875], at his home in Yountville, surrounded by his family and friends, after a long and painful illness in which he has suffered untold tortures before death finally relieved him. He was a pioneer citizen of California, having come in 1849, from Providence, Rhode Island, of which place he was a native. He settled in Yreka, and about 1857 came to this county, locating at Yountville, where be engaged in merchandising under the name of Lambert & Arnold, continuing up to a few days ago. He was also Postmaster at Yountville for some time, the period of which we are not now able to state. But the relation in which he was best known in Napa County was that of County Assessor, the duties of which office he discharged continuously for twelve years from 1863 to the present time — ten of which he himself held the office, and one term of two years when May field was elected he acted as Deputy, and discharged all the duties of the office.
