John Wooden, the man for whom Wooden valley on the Berryessa road was named, died at the residence of his son-in-law, B[enjamin] F. White, on Monday afternoon [November 14] and was buried in Wooden valley Wednesday [November 16] at 2 o’clock. He was born in Virginia in 1801, hence was 86 years of age at the time of his death, which resulted from old age. From his native State he emigrated to Ohio, thence to Michigan, and thence to California overland in 1846. During the Fremont campaign he was a member of the California troops, and was station at Santa Clara. It is not known to the writer when he came to Napa county, but it certainly was at an early day, settling in the valley which now bears his name. He leaves a son John living in Wooden valley, and a daughter, Mrs. White, who resides in St. Helena. In his youth he stood six feet and eight inches, and was as straight as an arrow, and whenever he appeared on the street he attracted attention by his extraordinary height. Mr. Logan states of the thousands of coffins he has fitted up this was the longest, being 6 feet, 7 inches in the clear at the bottom, and 7 feet 3 inches on the top.
