Wooden was found dead yesterday [May 20] in his home here, after neighbors, alarmed at not seeing him for several days, notified the police. His body was found in bed. Coroner Charles Burchell said death was due to a heart ailment. Wooden had been in ill health for many months, but had continued to live alone. Burchell said death probably occurred Sunday [May 15]. The deceased, born in Wooden Valley, attended school there, and as a youth came to Napa. He joined the local police force, serving for many years. He was retired by ill health with the rank of captain. During his captaincy, he served as police chief for many months during the illness of the regular chief. Following his retirement, he went to Susanville, where he regained his health. He returned to Napa and ran for constable, winning by a large majority over three opponents in the primaries. He served as constable for two years, then was forced to retire again because of ill health. He returned to Susanville and lived there five years. His later years were spent in Napa in retirement. He was a lifelong member of the Napa Aerie of Eagles. Interment was in the historic Wooden family plot in Wooden Valley.” END Additional Comments: Sacramento Bee (Sacramento, California).
