I-15 Santa Ana Man Dies on Train President of Lumber Company and Honored Citizen Was a Veteran of Civil War and Spent Six Months in Andersonville as a Prisoner of War - Body Embalmed and Conveyed to Santa Ana COLTON Feb 20 - Sanford Howard Pendleton passed away at Indio at 8:15 o'clock this morning on Southern Pacific Overland No. 9 while en route from Faywood Hot Springs, N. M. to his home in Santa Ana. Mr. Pendleton was accompanied by his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Gardner and a trained nurse. The body was taken from the train in this city to Knopsnyder's Undertaking parlors and prepared for interment, being shipped to Santa Ana this afternoon. Mr. Pendleton was born in Portland, Me., March 13, 1845, coming to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama in 1868. He founded the Pendleton Lumber Company at Santa Ana seventeen years ago. He remained president of his company until his death, his son-in-law, A. B. Gardner, being vice-president and manager. Mr. Pendleton was a member of the Seventh Maine Cavalry and while in battle was wounded at Louisiana. This resulted in his capture and he was imprisoned at Andersonville for six months.
