Book Title: Illustrated History Of Plumas, Lassen & Sierra Counties

POPULATION.

   The first census taken in Plumas county was enumerated by F. B. Whiting in
1860, at which time the population had fallen off considerably from the amount
at the time of the organization of the county. Mr. Whiting's report shows a
total of 4,554, distributed as follows:

   In 1864 the county of Lassen was cut off, taking territory that contained in
1860 a population of 476, which loss was recovered in the next six years by the
increase of the part remaining. In 1870 G. W. Meylert was the enumerator, and
returned a total population of 4,489, distributed among the townships as follows:

   During the next decade, the population increased nearly one-half—a steady,
permanent growth, founded on the prosperity and resources of the county. The
census for 1880 shows the population of the county to be 6,262, as follows:
