Paulus, John R146 G14 H156287 I first visited the cemetery in May 1985. I had my uncle's row and grave number from his death certificate I was unable to locate the cemetery. Both the St. Mary's Cemetery and the Greek Orthodox Cemetery are adjacent to the Sacramento County Cemetery. I asked one of the caretakers of the St. Mary's Cemetery where it was and he showed me. The caretaker told me that the County Cemetery had been in use until about 1950 at which time it was used as a dumping ground for many years. (My uncle, Vivian Calvin SEARS, was buried there in 1930 as a county burial.) At some unknown year, according to the caretaker, the large field was cleared of trash and it was kept plowed each year. When the field was cleared, the concrete stones were piled at the ends of the rows. Throughout the field there were single stones strewn around with a few piles of stones of about eight to ten stones in each pile. Some of these stones still have the brass plaques attached that show the person's name, row number, grave number, and another identifying number. There were no dates on the plaques. The caretaker said the bodies were never exhumed. He said there were still two large headstones left in the field, but I was unable to locate them. This survey of the cemetery was done about two years later in July 1987. Many of the stones were partially buried and many no longer had the brass plaques attached. The list is comprised ofthe plaques that I was able to find. I have not returned to the cemetery, so I do not know what condition it is in today. The caretaker I spoke with in 1985 said the cemetery records for the Sacramento County Cemetery are held at the office of the St. Mary's Cemetery. St. Mary's wrote that they were responsible for the County Cemetery and due to sunken graves, the stones were buried at the ends of the rows St. Mary's Cemetery 65th Street Sacramento, CA 95820
