FATHER IMPRISONS ERRING DAUGHTER Los Angeles Girl Behind Prison Bars on Charge of Grand Larceny OROVILLE (Butte Co.), May 14 - Pending the arrival of a deputy sheriff from Los Angeles county pretty Miss Gladys E. PATES, arrested in Chico yesterday afternoon for grand larceny, is locked up in the county jail. The girl was arrested at the instigation of her father, a prominent and wealthy citizen of Los Angeles. It seems to be the desire of the father to retain control of the girl, who refused to live with her stepmother and who left the city of Angels sometime ago to go with her real mother to Chico. There she got employment in a store and was doing well until the warrant arrived and she was jailed. She accuses her father of all kinds of crimes and her story appears so truthful that Judge GRAY has taken up her case in an endeavor to see that she gets justice. His visit here is said to have similar import, and will probably lean to the Anderson interests taking over the Bank of Chico, one of the strongest institutions in the valley. The Kraft interests in Red Bluff and the Bank of Shasta of Redding are recent acquisitions. The Chico bank is one of the oldest in the valley, and has adopted and maintained a conservative policy. INQUEST HELD OVER BODY Instant Death Probably Followed Fatal Jump After the Noose Had Been Placed. AUBURN (Placer Co.), May 14 - Residents on the ranch of S. DOLCES, about a mile south of Loomis, were treated to a ghastly sight yesterday when, on being called by a boy of the neighborhood, they went to the fig orchard and there found the dead body of Joseph SOBARO, an Italian, swinging from a fig tree. Examination proved the body had been there several hours, and might have remained over night, save for the accidental discovery. Officers were at once notified, and the coroner was called. Coroner BISBE held an inquest over the remains. The evidence went to show that the dead man had been working in the vicinity, and making his home with one Joseph LIAGONO, a fruit and vegetable peddler, and that during the absence of Liagono, in Sacramento, he had made indecent proposals to the latter’s wife, who repulsed him and, escorted by a Jap, hurried to a neighbor’s for protection. She was followed by Sobaro, who passed the neighbor’s house, and, presumably, went to a nearby orchard. Cutting a rope from a well bucket, he climbed into a fig tree, fastened the rope about his neck and jumped to death, hanging there until found by a passing boy. The man had made a noose with a regulation hangman’s knot, and given himself drop enough to insure a quick and certain death., When found he was swinging about three feet above the ground.
