While details are not available it is said he died suddenly, probably the victim of a heart attack and members of his family living in town were not even aware that he was ill when they received the report of his death. Thorpe was born in Missouri about seventy-four years ago, coming here while a young man. His first wife long since preceded him to the grave and about four years ago he married Mrs. Mary Contival, owner of the adjoining ranch. Besides his wife, he leaves four children, Joseph Thorpe Jr., of Greenfield, Monterey county; Richard Thorpe, of Pinnacles, San Benito county; Mrs. Thomas Thuitt, of Salinas; and another daughter, formerly Lulu Thorpe, who resides near Burlingame. He also leaves several stepchildren. ============================================================================ Evening Free Lance Hollister, San Benito County, California Saturday, February 27, 1926 Thorp Burial Monday 2 P.M. Black over the remains of Joseph M. Thorpe, pioneer Cienega rancher, who passed away suddenly yesterday morning brought to light the fact that Mr. Thorpe has been enjoying normal health, with the exception of a slight indisposition recently, and his passing was wholly unexpected by his family and friends. Thorpe spent Thursday harrowing a field on his place, and was in excellent spirits. Thursday night he was restless, and thought this was caused by eating something which did not agree with him. Yesterday morning he was preparing to go to Hollister, with Mrs. Thorpe and other members of the family. When he went out into the yard, about 8:30 a.m., preparatory to entering his automobile, he suddenly fell to the ground. Mrs. Contival and other members of the family rushed to his aid but he died within a few minutes. About a week ago Thorpe had visited Dr. Hull who told him that there was nothing the matter except that he was too fat. He was a very heavy man and this is believed to have been the principal cause of his death. Thorpe was 74 years old. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon from the Black-Cooper undertaking parlors, and interment will be made at the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
