William Kelly, pioneer citizen of this valley and a prominenet resident of this county for forty-nine years, passed away last Tuesday at his home a short distance south of this city on the Tres Pinos road, after an illness of about three weeks which followed two years of poor health, due to the infirmities of old age. Mr. Kelly was born in Ireland and was 76 years old at the time of his death. He came to America with his parents while still a small child, that family settling in Massachusetts. In 1858 he joined the migration to California; settling in the Santa Clara Valley, where he lived for ten years. While there he married Miss Margaret Ball, who preceded him to the grave by five years. In 1868 Mr. Kelly moved to this county and became one of the fifty original members of the San Justo Homestead Association, which purchased the land now embracing the town of Hollister and its environments, and the subdivided the land into fifty tracts, which were apportioned to the members. He was allotted the land where his home now stands, and has resided there ever since. Mr. Kelly was well and widely known in his more active days, and was a prominent resident of this county. In 1877 he was a candidate for the state legislature on the Democratic ticket, and he has been a member of the board of school trustees of the Hollister district. He leaves to mourn his passing four sons and four daughters, Ernest J., William Jr., Frank and Martin Kelly, the Misses Irene, Grace and Florence Kelly and Mrs. Vivian Crawford of San Francisco. The others are all residents of Hollister with the exception of Frank who is deputy recorder of Santa Clara County at San Jose. Arrangements are being made to hold the funeral services on Thursday.
