Matthews, a native of Alabama, aged about 82 years. [The death of "Uncle" John Matthews, as he was affectionately termed by all who knew him, while not unexpected, as he had been for several years past an invalid, yet is a severe blow to his numerous friends and acquaintances throughout the State. A man of strict integrity, and unswerving devotion to principle, he was respected by all, and his death is a loss to the community. He served this county three terms as Democratic Assemblyman, and early in the service he was dubbed "Honest John Matthews," a term which stuck to him throughout his latter years. Deceased was a noble man--kind-hearted and genial. As an assemblyman he always reflected credit upon his party and the county at large. His voice was invariably raised for economy and reform of abuses, in the legislative halls, and his reputation as an honest, unapproachable legislator was State-wide, and gained for him the respect and confidence of his Republican opponents. In consequence of his reputation, deceased possessed great influence in the legislature, and any measure championed by him was sure of being passed. In this county he was universally respected and esteemed, and his death removes from our midst, a genial companion, a pioneer resident, and one of the noblest works of God--an honest man. The funeral took place last Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, at this place, under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, of which deceased was a member.] Additional Comments: San Benito County Burial, Removal & Transit Permits - Issued 1874 to 1910; MATTHEWS, John Hamilton.....13 May 1901.....M.....82y File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ca/sanbenito/obits/gob3829matthews.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/caobfiles/ File size: 2.3 Kb
