Palmtag, a native of California aged 47 years, 2 months and 10 days. [In the death of Mrs. Palmtag this community loses a most estimable woman. A pioneer in this county, she enjoyed the admiration and confidence of a large circle of friends, and the respect of all who knew her. She was born in Sacramento county in 1852, and when but an infant her parents removed to Amador county, and in 1875 the family removed to Santa Cruz county, where deceased resided until she was married to William Palmtag. The intelligence of her death was a great shock to her many friends and acquaintances, as it was not generally know that she was so seriously ill. The cause of her death was diabetes, a most insidious and painful disease, and from the first her case was pronounced hopeless. She bore her sufferings uncomplainingly, and calmly prepared to face the inevitable. Her death occurred last Saturday evening about 7 o'clock. On Friday afternoon she appeared no worse than usual, but sank into a stupor about 1 o'clock Saturday morning, which lasted until her death. Deceased was a most charitable and excellent woman. Of an unobtrusive, retiring nature, none but her most intimate friends were aware of the many charitable deeds she accomplished. Her sympathies enlisted in any cause, she gave it her entire time and attention until the matter was attended to. Withal, she was a woman of positive convictions and did not hesitate to champion, when necessary, anything which, in her opinion, was necessary for the advancement of the community. She was a charter member of Fidelity Rebekah Lodge of this place, and was twice elected Noble Grand of that lodge. At one time when the lodge commenced to languish, and the falling off of interest in its affairs by its members became so marked that fears were expressed that the lodge would suspend, deceased took hold of affairs, and by her enthusiasm and indefatigable efforts put it on a basis that has made it the leading lodge in Hollister. For her efforts on this occasion, and in recognition of her many estimable qualities, the lodge presented her with a costly Past Noble Grand's jewel, an honor never since conferred upon any other member. At the organization of the Fire Department in the early '80s, deceased was the leader in a movement which culminated in the presentation to the department of a costly silken flag, and it was most fitting that that flag should have been carried at the head of the funeral cortege last Tuesday afternoon. She was also Past President of Copa de Oro Parlor, N.D.G.W., of this place, and in her death that order loses a most zealous and energetic worker. The funeral, which took place last Tuesday afternoon was attended by people from miles around, and was one of the largest funerals seen here in a long time. Delegations were present from surrounding towns, and the high respect in which deceased was held was fully shown in the sorrow and grief expressed at her death. She had always been an unostentatious but zealous friend of our local fire department, and a large delegation from that body attended the funeral. The remains were interred in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.] Additional Comments: San Benito County Burial, Removal & Transit Permits - Issued 1874 to 1910; Palmtag, Mrs. K. 27 Oct 1900 F 47y Buried at the Hollister I.O.O.F.
