Born August 20, 1917, in Akron, Ohio, Mabel was a graduate with honors from San Bernardino High School and lived most of her life in Southern California. Mabel worked for Pacific Telephone in the Los Angeles area and retired after 30 years. Mabel's husband Ray retired after working 40 years for the railroad, and Ray and Mabel moved to Desert Hot Springs in 1974. Mabel loved to travel. She and her husband, Ray, visited Africa, Spain, New Zealand and India. Mabel, on her own, visited China and also took her "proxy" grandkids on trips; Julie to South America, up the Amazon and to the Galapagos Islands and Jeff to Australia. At age 63 in between her travels Mabel went back to work, this time at General Telephone in Palm Springs, where she worked for another 10 years and once again retired. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, and is survived by her "proxy" daughter, Sally Wright, and her husband, Jerry, of Big Bear Lake and their daughter, Julie Usher, and husband, Brian, and granddaughters, Jillian and Megan, all of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. and their son, Jeff Wright, and granddaughter, Abigail of San Juan Capistrano. Mabel is also survived by niece, Donna Ferguson, and her husband, Bob, of White Salmon, Wash., great nephew Bill Ferguson, and his wife, Diana, and their children, Ian and Jenae of Fountain Hills, Ariz., great nephew Garrin Ferguson and his wife, Nora, and their children Nora, Andrew and Errin of Vancouver, Wash., and great niece Vicki Saito and her husband, Kasey, and their children, Kira and Kai of West Linn, Ore. Also, nephew Jim Chernault of Las Cruces, N.M., great nephew Christopher Chernault of Santa Clarita, great niece Maria Stewart and her husband, Ronny, of Las Cruces, N.M. and great nephew Mark Chernault of Las Cruces, N.M. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 27, noon at the Miracle Springs Resort in Desert Hot Springs. At death, Mabel was cremated with her ashes to join those of her late husband, Ray, spread over the White Salmon River in Washington.
