"Big Bear Grizzly" Thursday, September 22, 2005
Robert "Bob" Downing passed on Aug. 30, 2005, just a week short of his 82nd 
birthday, with his wife, Jacqy, and his daughter Pam at his bedside, also his 
loyal Chihuahua, Chico, was on his lap.

Bob was born on Sept. 7, 1923, in Murchison, Texas, the youngest of five 
brothers.

Bob served in the Army as a medic during WWII. Upon discharge from the Army in 
1947, he joined the police department in Chico, Calif., where he was a 
motorcycle officer. In 1950, he joined the Barstow Police Department and rose 
to the rank of lieutenant before retiring in 1975. He then joined the Santa Fe 
Railroad Police, where he worked as a detective until his retirement in 1986.

Bob was involved in the Barstow Masonic Lodge #682, the San Diego Scottish Rite 
Bodies, and the Al Malaikah Shrine. He spent his retirement years traveling and 
playing golf.

Bob and his wife were part- time residents of Big Bear City from 1972 through 
2005, when they moved to the mountains on a permanent basis.
 
Bob is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jacqy; sons: Russell J. Downing and 
wife, Pamela of Poway, Calif.; Robert G. Downing and wife, Marcy of Lakeside, 
Calif.; daughters: Ginger Downing Sims and husband Warren of Bridgeport, Neb., 
and Pam S. Downing of Poway, Calif. He was predeceased by his eldest son, 
Robert Eugene Downing in 2002. He had 14 grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren, three nephews and three nieces, three grand nephews and three 
grand nieces.

Interment will be at St. Columba's Episcopal Church, 42324 North Shore Drive, 
Big Bear Lake, CA.

In lieu of flowers, make donations to St. Columba's Episcopal Church in Bob's 
name.
