Payne 97 years old. Emelyn "Grandma" Payne lived in Big Bear Valley for 28 years. She was born on May 26, 1908, in Grand Junction, Colo., and as she said, "where it snows and thunders.' Emelyn passed on August 20, 2005 in Big Bear Lake, Calif. In her childhood she lived on an 80-acre apple orchard. They grew 40 different varieties of apples. When she married, she moved to Pasadena, Calif. There she worked in her husband's chiropractic office. She is beloved by everyone who knew her. Grandma was also a concert violist and played at such famous places as the Hollywood Bowl and Wilshire Theater. Emelyn is survived by her son Raymond and his wife Dana, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service scheduled for today, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m., Shepherd in the Pines, Lutheran Church, Big Bear Lake, with Pastor Eugene Smith. Big Bear Mortuary, directors.
