He was an only child. At the age of fifteen he was called upon to mourn the loss of his indulgent father. When seventeen years of age he entered the University of New York, where he distinguished himself as an active and accurate scholar, and at the close of the full course in 1879 graduated with high honors, receiving the degree master of arts. Throughout the course he earned the distinction of honor-man and at the graduating ceremonies delivered the Greek salutatory. He immediatelu entered Bellevue Medical College and completed the full course of three years, during the whole time being upon the books as an honorable member. Here he developed more than ordinary ability and talent, and above all displayed a natural aptitude for the profession he had chosen. At the close of his course he graduated with distinction and obtained the degree doctor of medicine, after which he was accorded a position in Bellevue Hospital, first as ambulance and then as regular ohysician and surgeon, where he remained for two years. He then practiced medicine for about two years in New York City, or untill he came to Escondido. During his entire experience he was remarkably successful both as a physician and surgeon, and won the confidence of his patients and the esteem and approval of his fellow practitioners, by whom he was universally pronounced a practitioner of far above the ordinary ability and skill, and much was expected of his career in life. In complicated and serious cases which he had treated and advised upon, when examined in San Francisco by the most distinguished doctors, his treatment and diagnosis were approved and commended in the highest terms. On December 27th last he was joined in matrimony with an estimable lady, Miss Mattie A. Bucklaod, of Cazenovia, N.Y., who now, with his aged mother, sorely mourns his early death. His fatel illness, which was very brief, being less than a week, was edema of the lungs, complicated with congestion of the brain. The mortal remains, which were buried with Pythian honors, were deposited in the Escondido cemetery.
