FRIEND FOUND LIFELESS IN HIS ROOM YESTERDAY Had Been Failing For Several Months His Death Was Unexpected - Sketch of His Varied Career - His Cheerful Disposition Always Apparent. Capt. James Edward Friend, one of the best known men in San Diego county, died in a room at the Willard lodging house at Sixth and Estreets some time early yesterday morning. About 8 o'clock yesterday Mrs. Johnson, landlady at the Willard, went to inquire after his condition, and , receiving no response to repeated knocking at the door, entered the room and saw him lying dead in bed. she notified the authorities, and the body was removed to Johnson & Co.'s undertaking parlors. The news of Capt. Friend's death was heard with regret by his many friends andAcquaintances in this city. Although he had been fading in health for the past three months, his condition was not considered dangerous, and he was at all times able to walk about. His death is believed by Dr. Gochenauer, his attending physician, to have been directly caused by choking, the result of a hemorrhage of the bowels, with which Capt. Friend had been afflicted for the past twenty days. Capt. Friend was 58 years old, and his life had been rather eventful. He was a native of Alabama, where his relatives were prominant. At an early age he entered the confederate army in the thirteenth Alabama regiment of cavalry, commamded by his brother, Charles Friend, now a resident of Missouri, and gradually rose to the rank of Captain. The only injuries he received were slight sbre cuts on the wrists. After the war, Capt. Friend went to Indiana, and became prominent at [ unreadable]......learned telegraphy and later was manager for the Western Union company at Evensville. His Military experiance caused him to take great interest in the milita, and he became somewhat celebrated as a drill master.
