RESIDED HERE 60 YEARS, NOW DEAD
Geo. Lyons, Who Came Around Horn in 1847, Passes Away at Old Town.

George Lyons, one of San Diego's oldest residents, passed away yesterday 
afternoon at 4:30 o'clock in his home at Old Town at the old age of 84 
years, 8 months and 24 days. Deceased had been failing for some time from 
effects of old age, but death was precipitated by an attack of la grippe.

Deceased had lived in San Diego more than 60 years. He was a native of 
Ireland and came to New York when a boy. He had made the trip around the 
Horn from New Bedford and arrived in San Diego in the year 1847. He remained 
here only a short time then. He went off on a whaling expedition the same 
year, but returned in 1848, when he settled in Old Town. He lived there from 
that time until death overtook him yesterday afternoon.

In the early days Mr. Lyons conducted a merchandising business at Old Town. 
He was sheriff of the county at one time and was also in the contracting and 
building business for a number of years.

Deceased is survived by nine children, seven sons and two daughters. His wife 
died about four years ago. The survivors are William, a resident of Mexico; 
Alexander and John of Jerome; Mrs. G. Y. Harry, of Portland, Ore.; Ben Lyons, 
of Coronado, and George, Andrew and Daniel Lyons and Mrs. Fred Thomas, all of 
this city.

Interment will be made at the Catholic cemetery, but funeral arrangements have 
not yet been made.

Mexico, Alexander and John Lyons of Jerome, Ariz., Mrs. G. Y. Harry of 
Portland, 
Ore., Benjamin Lyons of Coronado, Mrs. Fred Thomas, George, Andrew and Daniel 
Lyons of this city; a native of Ireland; aged 84 years, 8 months, 14 days.

Friends are invited to attend the funeral services at the Catholic church at 
Old 
Town at 10 o'clock a.m. today. Interment at Catholic cemetery.
