DEYOUNG DeYOUNG, Michael Harry,: Founder and publisher of the San Francisco "Chronicle," is the son of Michael H. and Amelia DeYoung, and was born in St. Louis, Mo., October 1st, 1849. Came to California with his parents when five years of age. With his brother Charles, founded a publication which in 1865 became the San Francisco "Chronicle". Upon the death of his brother in 1880, Mr. DeYoung became sole owner and developed the Chronicle into one of the leading newspapers of the Pacific Coast. Was Commissioner from California to the Paris Exposition in 1889; candidate for United States Senator in 1892; Director-General, California Mid-Winter Exposition, 1893-4; Delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1888 and 1892; Delegate-at-large and Chairman California delegation Republican National convention, 1908, and for 8 years was a member of the Republican National Committee. Ex-President of the International League of Press Clubs; Director of the Associated Press during 1882; Commissioner-General from California to the Omaha Trans-Miss. Exposition, 1898; U. S. Commissioner and President of the U. S. Commission to the Paris Exposition in 1900. Founded and established the M. H. DeYoung Memorial Museum in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Was a member of the Union League, Olympic, Commercial, and Country Clubs, and resided at 1919 California Street, San Francisco. Died Feb. 15, 1925.
