He was regarded as one of the most valuable members of the City Council when he died March 10, 1930. Mr. Rahill was born in Ireland, in 1865, son of Patrick and Margaret (Brady) Rahill. He came to this country when eighteen years of age, living in Philadelphia for a time, and two years later came to California. At Fresno he was for a time editorial writer for the Fresno Republican and later was associated with one of the banks of that city. On moving to Berkeley, Mr. Rahill became connected with the Cutter Laboratories, of which he was secretary and general manager at the time of his death. He was widely known as an expert on corporation accounting, was a certified public accountant, and one of the direct products of his long experience in this business was the authorship of a text book on Corporation Accounting and Corporation Law, which was used for some years in Yale and other universities. Prompted primarily by business reasons, he traveled extensively throughout the world, and his travels brought him a personal knowledge of Australia, South America and the older civilizations of Europe and Asia. Throughout his residence at Berkeley he gave generously of his time and efforts in behalf of civic betterment movements. He was a leader in civic projects, in the official life of the city and in industrial circles. He was a past president of the Manufacturers Association, had served as chairman of the industrial committee of the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Rotary and City Commons Clubs and Berkeley Lodge No. 1002, B. P. O. Elks. Mr. Rahill on April 3, 1928, was appointed to the City Council to a vacancy and in May, 1929, was elected for a four year term. One city official expressed the opinion that Mr. Rahill was "undoubtedly one the most conscientious and able members who ever served on the City Council." He married Catherine G. Culkin, of New York State. Five children were born to them, their only son, Robert Anselm, being deceased. Of the four daughters Genevieve Margaret is known as Sister Mary Raymund of the Presentation Convent of Los Angeles. Marion Edith is the wife of W. D. Trewartha, an insurance man at Berkeley, and they have two children, Cathryne Jeanne and William Rahill Trewartha. The other two daughters are Miss Florienne Eleanor and Miss Imelda Madelon.
