The deceased was at the head of the California Furniture Company for many years and was identified with various other business enterprises. For the last eight years he had been president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in this city. Please omit flowers.” END San Francisco Call, July 8, 1903 (Wednesday), Page 7, Column 1 “NATHANIEL COLE'S DEATH GRIEVES MANY FBIENDS Patriotic and Benevolent Citizen, Connected With Many Philanthropic Movements, Expires. The death of Nathaniel P. Cole at the age of 72, which occurred at Ben Lomond, Santa Cruz County, on Monday last, came as a surprise to his numerous friends in this city. While he had not been in robust health of late it was not thought that his condition was such as to cause any immediate alarm and his passing away after two weeks’ illness was quite unexpected by his family. A widow and eight children, Emma E. and Nell H. Cole, Mrs. Lester B. Smith, Foster P., Charles M., John F., N. Parker and William E. Cole, survive him. All the members of his family were at his bedside when he died. Mr. Cole was in the furniture business near Boston when a young man and came to San Francisco in 1864, when he organized the firm of N. P. Cole & Co., which was afterwards known as the California Furniture Company. He was its president until the concern sold out in 1900 to the John Breuner Company. Up to the time of his death and for many years previous he was a director of the Donohoe- Kelly Bank, besides bring interested in many other business enterprises. He was a public spirited citizen and was especially interested in philanthropic and religious institutions. Since 1865 he had been one of the pillars of the Plymouth Congregational Church of this city. For a long time he served as trustee of the San Francisco Young Men's Christian Association and in like capacity showed his interest in the Pacific Theological Seminary. For many years he was president of the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Mr. Cole retired from active business in 1900, since which time he had devoted himself to the welfare of the charitable and religious institutions which he had assisted to build up. The funeral will take place this morning at 11.30 o'clock from Plymouth Congregational Church. The Rev. Dr. George C. Adams, pastor of the First Congregational Church, will conduct the service. The pall bearers will be B. P. Moore. Sylvester Merrill, W. M. Searby, Robert Coulter. Henry Schlosser and J. Q. Garfield. The interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland.” END San Francisco Call, July 25, 1903 (Saturday), Page 14, Column 2 “Cole’s Will Is Filed. The will of the late Nathaniel P. Cole, the furniture man, was filed for probate yesterday. He leaves his estate which is said to be very large, to his widow, Elizabeth Olive Cole and his eight children.
