Cole, Who Left the Mint on Account of Poor Health, Is Dead Daniel T. Cole, one of the most prominent figures in California politics for more than 25 years, died yesterday morning at his home, 46 Sixth avenue, at the age of 76. A native of Montpelier, Vt., being born in 1832, Cole came to California in 1852. He was one of the early settlers of Sierra county and for many years operated a stage line between Nevada City and Downieville and owned the famous Mountain house in Sierra county. Cole was a delegated to every state republican convention for more than 25 years, and he always among the leaders of the delegates. In 1892 he was elected delegate to the national republican convention, and was given the same honor in 1896. Upon the election of President McKinley "Dan" Cole, as he was more generally known, was appointed coiner at the United States mint in San Francisco, which office he held until about a year ago, when he resigned on account of poor health. He was a member of the state board of harbor commissioners from 1893 until 1897, receiving his appointment from ex-Governor Markham. He was married in 1858 to Miss Ana Lake of San Francisco, who died several years ago. A son, William Lake Cole; a daughter, Mrs. E. L. Hunt, and a sister, Mrs. H. Haskell of Vermont, survive. Cole was a past noble grand of the Odd Fellow's, a member of the Knights of Pythias, Union League club and chamber of commerce.
