Mrs. Eliza M. Farley died yesterday at the residence of her son, Newton S. Farley, in Oakland, the immediate cause of death being blood poisoning in the foot, contracted about two months ago. Mrs. Farley was born in Ohio, February 14, 1822, and when a young child removed to Southwestern (now Berrien county) Michigan, where her father, Major Timothy S. Smith was commissioned deputy governor by Lewis Cass, then Governor of the Territory of Michigan. Here she saw much of frontier life and learned many traits and much of the language of the Indians. Here she married Ebenizer Farley in 1840 and in 1854 the family removed to California, coming across the plains by ox teams, and settled in Alvarado, Alameda county, where the family resided until a few years after the death of Mr. Farley, in 1879. Since then Mrs. Farley has resided in Gilroy, Monterey, Los Gatos and Oakland. She was the mother of the late Eben Farley of Los Gatos, James H. Farley of Hanford, Newton S. Farley of Oakland, Mrs. Ella Emlay of Pacific Grove, Mrs. Mary E. Fowler of Los Gatos and Mrs. Emma F. Baker, deceased. She has many relatives in various parts of the State."
