Page 1, Column 2. “DEATH OF J. O. RAWLINS. Some few weeks since, at the explosion at the Golden Gate Sugar Refinery, caused by the bursting of a centrifugal pan, Mr. J[errard] O. Rawlins met with a most serious accident, which terminated in his death at half-past eleven o’clock yesterday morning [December 8]. The refinery had commenced operations for the first time, and Mr. Rawlins, who was interested in the Company, in connection with his partners went to the establishment during the latter part of the evening to see how everything worked. They had been there but a short time when the sad accident occurred, the immediate cause being a flaw in one of the pieces of iron. Mr. Rawlins was conveyed to his home, and a few days afterwards suffered an amputation of the leg, and for days it was hoped that he would survive his injuries. Deceased was, at the time of his death, Collector of Internal Revenue for this district, and was a brother of the late General J [ohn] A[aron] Rawlins, Secretary of War. He has been in this State for a number of years, and was esteemed and beloved by all who knew him. He was 37 years of age and a member of Mount Moriah Lodge, No. 44, F. and A. M., under whose auspices the funeral will take place to-morrow [December 10] at 1 p.m.” END AND Sacramento Daily Union, November 4, 1869 (Thursday), Page 2, Column 3. “E.
